A spinal cord injury is also a brain injury.

Spinal cord injury produces abrupt irreversible deafferentation of supraspinal circuits. This deafferentation leads to major long-term reorganization, reflecting remarkable plasticity in the adult brain: cortical and subcortical representations of intact body areas expand, topographically invading the representations of body areas affected by the deafferentation. Brain reorganization promotes functional sensorimotor recovery, but excessive or maladaptive reorganization can have pathological consequences, such as phantom sensations and neuropathic pain. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms and the clinical consequences of brain reorganization after spinal cord injury are not completely understood.

The “1st International Workshop on Brain Reorganization after Spinal Cord Injury” will provide an international forum to fully examine this emerging field in neuroscience. The workshop will be held on May 10th – 12th, 2011, in Toledo (Spain), organized jointly by the Hospital Nacional de Parapléjicos (Toledo, Spain) and Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA, USA).

The Hospital Nacional de Parapléjicos, located in the historic city of Toledo (30 min by train from the Spanish capital Madrid), is one of the largest hospitals in Europe exclusively devoted to patients with spinal cord injury.  In addition to the clinical facilities, the hospital has a growing scientific research community dedicated to the study of spinal cord injury, including groups specifically devoted to brain reorganization after spinal cord injury.

At the workshop, an international selection of renowned scientists will present and discuss their work. The lectures are targeted at Ph.D-students, postdoctoral fellows and senior researchers, both in basic and clinical science, with an interest in brain reorganization after spinal cord injury and related fields.
In addition to the invited lectures, we expect all participants to be active contributors with poster presentation. Submission of an abstract is required for the registration.

We hope that participating in this workshop will be both enjoyable and valuable to you.

The organizers

Guglielmo Foffani, Antonio Oliviero, Juan Aguilar and Karen Moxon
